Schumacher: Mercedes appears “almost desperate”
With Ralf Schumacher explaining on Sky, another expert, that the situation at Mercedes is “difficult.” Lewis Hamilton has already “run away” for 2025, “because he no longer believes in the team,” according to Schumacher.
“At the moment, Mercedes is in a mess. It’s a catastrophe what they are doing at the moment. They sometimes don’t even know what they are doing,” he believes, echoing a similar sentiment to Danner.
He also cannot understand why Mercedes initially wanted to try a one-stop strategy with both cars in Suzuka. “It is almost desperate, at least that’s the impression,” says Schumacher.
“At the moment, the team doesn’t understand how things should run,” he criticizes, emphasizing that there is “a lot to do” if Mercedes wants to get back to the front.

Danner: Situation at Mercedes is “desolate”
Several experts have heavily criticized Mercedes after their recent performance in Japan. Christian Danner, for example, tells ServusTV: “This is definitely a catastrophe that we are witnessing.”
Especially for Toto Wolff’s statement that the race wasn’t so bad at times, he has no understanding. “He must have watched a different Grand Prix somehow,” says Danner.
The attempted one-stop strategy was “an act of desperation,” according to the former Formula 1 driver. These are perfect examples that show “how desolate it looks there at the moment,” Danner says.
While other teams like Ferrari have made progress recently, the “problem” for Toto Wolff and co. is simply the car. “And his drivers also say so. They are ‘lost’,” the expert believes.
